Welcome to Americana was a project that was born from a desire to replicate the look and feel of “toy cameras” such as the Holga. The Holga's low-cost construction and simple meniscus lens often yields pictures that display vignetting, blur, light leaks, and other distortions. The difficulty was to randomly recreate this distinct look without it coming across as mechanical. Although I took many photographs I edited the series down to just 12 photographs. I had this idea that I wanted this project be similar to an musical album where each photograph represented a track on the album and all the tracks joined together to create a story.
I wanted subject matter to give the viewer a “fly on the wall” voyeuristic perspective of daily life. Locations range from a shopping mall and coffee shop to an old truck and a street scene.
